California disbars John Eastman over role in 2020 election reversal effort

California has disbarred attorney John Eastman over his involvement in the effort to overturn the 2020 presidential election. The state's Supreme Court declined on Wednesday to review a lower court's recommendation to revoke his law license, bringing a formal end to a disciplinary case that began nearly four years ago.

Eastman, a former law professor and close legal adviser to Donald Trump after the election, helped craft arguments that claimed widespread voter fraud and urged state legislatures to ignore certified results. Multiple courts rejected these claims as baseless, and judicial authorities in California later found that Eastman had violated professional ethics by advancing what they called dishonest and reckless legal theories.

In 2022, the State Bar of California's Office of Chief Trial Counsel filed formal charges, arguing that Eastman knew or should have known the claims lacked evidence. A hearing panel agreed, concluding he had engaged in dishonesty and committed acts that negatively impacted the legal system. His license was suspended that same year, pending final review.

The California Supreme Court's decision not to intervene means the disbarment is now final. While Eastman retains the right to apply for reinstatement in the future, such outcomes are rare, especially in cases involving serious ethical breaches tied to public trust.

Beyond the disciplinary case, Eastman also faces criminal charges in Georgia as part of a broader indictment related to efforts to interfere with the election in that state. He has pleaded not guilty and continues to fight those charges in court.

The disbarment underscores the legal profession's effort to hold attorneys accountable for roles in actions that threaten democratic processes. It also reflects a growing precedent that lawyers who misuse their credentials to advance unfounded claims may face serious professional consequences.
